An international partnership between Mpala Research Center in Kenya, Project Central in Kansas City, KS and StoneLion Puppet Theatre Kansas City, MO to bring a global awareness through puppets and art of the need to save the biodiversity of our planet.
Hannah is the star of the book “Helpful Hannah Hippo” written and illustrated by Dr. Dino j. Martins of the Mpala Research Centre. The book demonstrates the rewards of working together and how each of our talents is needed to support each other. This concept is extended to the realm of biodiversity and climate change through the array of animal characters Hannah and her friends encounter.
In the summer of 2022, StoneLion Puppet Theatre and Project Central traveled to Kenya to hold a teacher training at Mpala Research Center and launch a BRAND NEW SHOW based on the book. This show played to over 1000 students in Northern Kenya in Laikipia County. The work culminated in a free environmental art festival June 25,2022 at Mpala. StoneLion’s Artistic Director, Heather Loewenstein worked with local Kenyan Puppeteer, Fedelis Khaylo, of Krystal Puppets to tour the show. His original drumming and script edits added authenticity to the show and tons of fun.
This project was made possible with a grant from the US Embassy Nairobi and with support from Mpala Research Center in Kenya. Additional partners include Daraja Girls School, The Northern Kenya Conservation Clubs, Krystal Puppets, Buni Media, Kenyan Institute of Puppet Theatre and Puppets 254.
This production is available for touring in the United States and Internationally. Grant support for free performances in the Kansas City Metropolitan area can now be reserved for the 2022-2023 school year thanks to the Midwest Trust Center.
